If you are married, dating, shacking up, hanging out, or whatever you call it, if your finances are commingled with another person, you’ve got to sit and talk with your partner. CB4UB will not work if only one party is making the change. You both have to commit to the program to have success. This may be a deal-breaker for some of you. Financial difficulties are the number one reason for divorce in this country, so check with your partner and work it out now! When I used to host my annual financial interventions, I wouldn’t allow folks to attend who were married or cohabitating unless each party agreed to begin the new CB4UB way of life. Full transparency is very important in a healthy relationship. In addition to joint savings and investment accounts, you will need to agree to have one joint bank account for all household expenses. Nothing else should come out of that account. Nowadays, auto-draft billing makes this fairly easy to do. Then each of you will get a weekly or monthly allowance to be deposited into your separate but equal personal accounts.

If you are a dual-income household, it might be time to think about living on one of your incomes and investing the other person’s income. Yes, you read that correctly. Dave and I have done this for years. And guess which income we live off? The one who earns the least. If you can do this for a specific time, you will amass enough in savings and investments to one day live off the interest and passive income earned from those investments; then, you can both stop trading your time for money and quit working and start living. How else do you think I was able to retire at forty-one? That’s the best way to keep the budget straight and to get yo’ mind right about CB4UB as a couple. Now, if you can’t afford to live on one income or you’re not a dual-income family, consider some incentives, such as a couple’s saving’s competition. Who can save the most? The loser could be tasked with doing chores around the house. Or, whoever saves the most could earn an extra twenty dollars per pay period. Competition can be fun in marriage and a heck of an incentive. Small amounts add up!
